Despite number 1 ranking, the Texas Football process remains the same as ever

Yesterday Texas football earned one of the highest awards that a team is on its way to a season: the number 1 place in the AP poll.

Because it is number 1 in the coaches survey that can be softened the week before, the impact can be soften somewhat, but it is still historical – it is the first time that Texas ever has discussed number 1 for a season. Not in the 2000s, not a first in the history of Longhorn in the 1960s – 2025.

Expectations shift when you get that kind of invoicing. The Longhorns were a top-four team to start 2024, but that was their debut year in the SEC and followed the first really successful season of the Steve Sarkisian era. Each respect period evaporated after a 2024 campaign that ended in the SEC Championship match and the semi -final of the Football Playoff College.

So when Sarkisian spoke to the media on Monday, the question was simple in everyone: is something else now? Coaches usually give the same recycled answers to these moments, but around the program there is a feeling really different this year.

Year 5 Sark. Arc. A defense that could be the best of the nation, led by three of the top players in the country. The apologies have disappeared.

Nevertheless, Sarkisian insists that attention has not changed the approach of his team.

“We just focus on the process, do you know? Really, I wish I could tell you that that is something else that we did. That is exactly what we have done in the last three years, in the past four years, and it has served us pretty well,” he said. “We have played for two conference championships for the past two years. We have been to the College Football Playoff Semifinals two years in a row. We are knocking on the door two years in a row.”

If there is a constant in the term of office of Sarkisian, it is stuck to what he believes works. The attack he brought in 2021 is still the style of Texas today. He has recruited elite athletes from all over the country. And he kept the perspective on what is ranked no. 1 really means.

“I don’t work with my head in the sand. I speak to the ranking because they are going to see it here, but they understand that it really doesn’t matter,” said Sarkisian. β€œWat doen we? “

Few players in this schedule have experienced everything than winning. Most came from Powerhouse High School programs. Only two stock market players were here for the 5-7 season in 2021. Outside of incoming transfers, the “worst” year the veterans have seen 8-5.

That background, Sarkisian believes, feeds the competition. Players want to beat their opponents and their teammates for starting spots. Everyone in that star room wants to open against Ohio State.

“Ultimately, a by -product of a really good competitor means that you take care of your body, you prepare your mentally in the right way, you prepare yourself in the right way,” Sarkisian said. “And then you have the opportunity to perform when it is necessary. The by -product is winning. I think they appreciate the process, perhaps more than the result, and that is something I now appreciate to our team. These guys really enjoy the process.”

The process has increased Manning to QB1 and earned Michael Taaffe A fair. It has not yet delivered a national title performance – or victory. Sarkisian did not shy away from reality: having a “1” next to your name is the most important at the end of the season.
